Can anyone give me the name of this film?

its an 80's film i think, and theres this boy who goes on a spaceship, and the boy looks at some alien in a clear box and the alien eats his hat? the alien is small, could fit in your hand. and for some reason i think the boys name is daniel but its just a guess
