Hi there. I would highly recommend calling in a professional here. Steam cleaning is not an option as it leaves a carpet wet for days. This runs the risk of the carpet shrinking and it becomes a breathing ground for mould etc. The shampoo may have locked the soot in. The shampoo needs to be extracted as the surfactant in the shampoo will attract dirt like a magnet. I can recommend your local ChemDry agent. Ive used them for a similar situation I had. Carpet was like new and dry in 1 hour when they had finished.
