Quitting student council? Does it look bad to quit?

I'm in student council in high school and its consuming alot of my time which i would rather be spending in other activities or getting my hw done. I depend on riding the bus home from school and its really hard for me to get rides if we have meetins after school. The council is really unorganized and there is no advanced notices of meetings (like we will find out we have a meeting THAT day at school). A couple of my friends have already quit because they can't stand it either. I missed one of the meetings we had to plan Sadie Hawkins and I found out the next day that I had been made chair commissioner without my permission or consent. My grades are slipping somewhat because its so time consuming. I've talked to my parents about this and they think I should quit. The person in charge of the council is the kind of person who would tell me to talk to someone else if I asked him, and that guy doesn't have a clue what's going on either. Anyone have advice or similar experiences?
