You use both methods depending. If you have mentioned the author in the sentence already it is redundant to also include the name in parentheses and in that case you can just put the page number (294). Also, if you are making several points from the same source throughout one paragraph and the reader is clear that you are taking them all from McCarthy, you can just list the page number reference alone after each sentence.
