Can i get into a military academy?

I have a book (brochure kinda sorta) thing about joining the army as an officer, and the ways you can do it. I'm really interested in going to a military academy. It says "You may also receive an automatic nomination if you're an enlisted Soldier, and honor student in ROTC or the son or daughter of a career military person..." I'm wonder what it mean when it says career military person. My dad retired from the military after 20 something years, so does that mean I can get in? If so is it just West Point, or any?
